Water is the basis of all life; it flows through and around everything that is essential to humanity. This means that to provide for a child’s developmental growth, water must be safe, accessible and affordable. Furthermore, said water must be sourced from a dependable source free of contamination and pollution. The water must also be available at least 12 hours a day in order to support daily activities.
However, how is water transported from its source to those most in need of it? Water availability can often be a massive issue when providing humanitarian aid. Furthermore, this problem is exacerbated by conflicts and humanitarian crises with children in conflict zones up to 20 times more likely to die from unsanitary water than from the conflict itself. The International Red Cross estimates that in certain conflict zones, water availability is reduced by 30-40% due to the damage caused on the water supply network.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle said, “Do not withhold the superfluous water, for that will prevent people from grazing their cattle.”
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 40, Number 543
